Vintage 1960s ULTRA RARE UK size 16 white & blue floral print maxi dress.

Brand - By Irish Couturier John Cavanagh. (His Ready To Wear Range)

Condition - Good vintage condition for its age.

Has been freshly laundered so is ready to wear.

John Cavanagh was an Irish Couturier of the 1950s and 1960s. He Began working as Pierre Balmain's assistant in 1947 after a sting in the British Army Intelligence Corps after the war broke out. In 1952 he launched his own fashion house in London. After just one collection he joined the Incorporated society of London Fashion Designers which was unusual as designers were normally expected to present at least four collections before considered for election. His reputation grew and it was cemented with his coronation collection in 1953 to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth the second. And, although only in business for just less than a year, members of the English aristocracy ordered his dresses to wear to the coronation celebrations.
In the 1960's Cavanagh moved in to the ready to wear market as fashion became more youth-focused. This didn't really take off for him and he retired in 1972.

This dress is one of his ready to wear pieces. Although not a couture piece is still a very rare piece and there are virtually no other John Cavanagh dresses for sale right now.

This one is made from what feels like a cotton blend fabric and is a double layered dress.

In white & blue floral print.

It has a round neckline and fastens to the back of the dress , the inner white lining, with a metal zip and hook. The outer floral pattern layer fastens over the top with buttons and a hook & eye.

It is sleeveless.

Maxi in length and fairly straight in style. Not a perfect column dress but not flared or swingy either.

A really lovely dress, perfect for summer and ready to grace any collectors wardrobe.

Please note that the dress is being shown pinned to fit the mannequin.

Vintage sizes often come up smaller than modern day sizes. For this reason we measure each of our garments and estimate the modern day size of it based on today's fashion industry standards.
